CHAPTER 13

When Arthur and Dani walked into the dining room the three remaining editors were there, waiting.

“Where is Pierre?” an attractive woman with an Italian accent asked.

“Due to some unfortunate circumstances, he is unable to be here at the moment, but he asked me to escort you to the conference room. As you may remember from last night, my name is Arthur Martinez, and I’m Chef Dani’s sous-chef. I’m sure there is a far more elegant way to get to the conference room, but the only way I know of is through the kitchen. Would you please follow me?”

“Wait a minute. We came here to be with Pierre. What’s this all about?” a woman, obviously French, asked.

“I’ll explain everything when we’re seated in the conference room. Please come with me.”

The women looked at one another with puzzled expressions on their faces as they began to follow Arthur out of the room. Dani went with them.

When they were seated, Arthur said, “There’s fresh coffee on the credenza, and if you’re hungry, there are a number of breakfast items to choose from.”

Two of the women stood up and poured themselves a cup of coffee, while the other woman looked at Arthur, waiting to hear what he was going to say.

When everyone was seated, Arthur began. “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Pierre discovered JoJo Morales’ body in her suite about an hour ago. She was unresponsive and appeared to be deceased. There is a possibility that she may have been murdered. The police are on their way here as we speak.”

At his words, there were audible gasps and words of disbelief. They all started to talk at once and over the din, an American voice said, “Why are you telling us about this and not Pierre?”

“I am Chef Rosetti’s sous-chef, but I am also the owner of a private investigation firm. Dani and I met when the television studio where she filmed her cooking show requested a bodyguard for her. Since I have loved to cook for as long as I can remember, I personally took the job, rather than have one of my staff do it. Dani and I became friends, and when she left the world of television, she asked me to join her in her new venture, VIP Catering.

“Helping Chef Rosetti is more of an avocation for me than a vocation. I have a number of people who work for me. When I met Pierre, I told him my background, and when this tragedy occurred this morning, he immediately came to the guesthouse where we’re staying to ask my advice. He’s waiting right now for the police to arrive.”

Just then Matt walked into the room and over to Arthur. In a low voice he told him that the police had just arrived and they had asked that the women stay in the conference room until the lead detective, who was on his way, had an opportunity to interview them.

“Ladies, Matt, my investigative assistant, has just talked to the police.
